Lady Hybris is a Zeor high school student known for her extensive work as an amateur detective.

The Great Detective

Hybris is famous for her preternatural deduction skills, having solved dozens of murder cases since the age of 7. Nobody is quite sure why so many murders happen in close proximity to this one random teenager, but it's probably not worth worrying about.

Hybris has a rather tumultuous relationship with Ford Lincoln Mercury, the sheriff of Union County, who often becomes exasperated at her tendency to insert herself into police investigations, and Detective G. M. Olds, who is tired of his professional investigative work being shown up by an arrogant child. Sergeant Chrysler Plymouth, another of Mercury's deputies, is a little more patient with her.

When revealing the final clue that led to her deduction, Hybris typically begins her monologue with "Don't you think it's odd, Sheriff?"

Background

When Hybris was 7, her mother and father died in what appeared to be a bizarre accident. Hybris, unsatisfied with the sheriff's office's handling of the situation, began investigating on her own. Eventually, she determined that her parents had been murdered and identified the perpetrator--the first of many cases the precocious young girl would go on to solve.

Following her parents' death, Hybris continued living alone in her family's house at 27 N. Pleasant Street in Sterling Township. Sheriff Mercury was initially concerned about leaving a child to live without adult supervision, but agreed to let the arrangement continue, because without Hybris around, none of the crimes in Union County would ever be solved.

Today, Hybris is a sophomore at Jessica Fletcher Memorial High School, where upperclassman A provides her with "detective gadgets" of dubious efficacy. Most days she can be seen wearing her late mother's silver wristwatch, ostensibly as a memento, though also just because it looks cool.

Despite being too young to obtain a driver's license, Hybris frequently drives her mother's 1964½ Ford Mustang convertible. Why the sheriff turns a blind eye towards this is anybody's guess.

Personality

Hybris, befitting her name, tends to conduct herself in an arrogant and self-important manner. Her detective work is motivated not by a sense of justice or morality but simply by the desire to demonstrate her intelligence and feel superior to others. She sincerely believes herself to be the smartest person in the world. It's really not worth the time or effort to try to argue with her about it. Don't ask me how I know this.

Hybris is a resolute atheist and adamantly asserts her lack of belief in the paranormal, the supernatural, Santa Claus, magical girls, and the double horse. This is, of course, an entirely reasonable stance to take as a denizen of a nation ruled by an omnipotent alien and leads to no cognitive dissonance whatsoever.

Name

Hybris has never revealed her real name. She claims this is to protect her safety, but she calls herself "Lady Hybris", so it might just be because she has a big ego. Other people are happy to use her chosen pseudonym, though few humor her on the faux title of nobility.

Rather hypocritically, Hybris often insists on referring to celebrities by their "real" names rather than stage names, such as addressing M3L1SSA as "Melissa Hawthorne" every time.

Notable cases

• While attending an anime convention in Capital City, Hybris cleared Starry Knight of the murder of voice actor Vic Timm.
• Hybris investigated the murder of M3L1SSA's drummer during a concert at a state fair. Guitarist Cordelia was implicated in the crime, but Hybris cleared their name by pointing out an inconsistency in a witness's account of the events: Robinson claimed to have seen Cordelia playing a right-handed guitar, but Cordelia plays guitar left-handed.
