While the Civil Guard is formally styled as a gendarmerie, in practice, little about it is military in nature, in keeping with the broadly pacifist nature of Centralian politics. [[Princess Meredith]] has acknowledged that she chose the name "Royal Centralia Civil Guard" just because it sounds cooler than "Police Department".

The [[Royal Highway Patrol]] is the division of the Royal Centralia Civil Guard responsible for enforcement of traffic codes.

== Jurisdiction ==
While the Civil Guard exercises nationwide jurisdiction, its service primarily focus on unincorporated areas, municipalities with populations under 50,000, and Crown properties within larger municipalities. Municipalities with a population of 50,000 or greater generally maintain their own local police agencies, though for some reason it's still always Constable Payne who responds. She's just wearing a slightly different badge depending on which city's police department she says she works for that day.
